The passenger services of Etihad Rail will start operating in 2026, and the first operational phase will be the connection between Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah. The implementation will be done in phases with routes being chosen based on population demand, connectivity needs and transport priorities between the emirates.
The initial phase is likely to be a significant step in the national transport strategy of the UAE, providing residents and visitors with a new means of transportation between major cities and the east coast. By 2030, the wider passenger network is projected to accommodate approximately 36.5 million passengers each year.
Etihad Rail has also announced planned stations throughout the country, including locations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah, as well as Al Sila, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Meeraira, Al Faya and Al Dhaid. These stations will be put into operation in stages.
Passenger trains will be used to facilitate safe, reliable and efficient travel with each train carrying approximately 400 passengers. The service is included in the broader initiative of the UAE to enhance the transport services, alleviate the pressure on the roads and improve the connectivity between emirates.
The freight network of Etihad Rail is already in operation, and the passenger service will introduce a new dimension to the mobility system in the country. The 2026 launch is likely to be keenly followed as the UAE proceeds to a more connected and sustainable transport future.
